The Climate Conference breaks the record for the presence of fossil fuel lobbyists, there are almost 2,500 lobbyists, three times more than in 2022. They are responsible for 75% of greenhouse gas emissions, the main cause of global warming. There are seven lobbyists for every one indigenous person present at the conference.
The lack of political will can condemn the future of all humanity. The 1.5°C limit, which will already have devastating consequences for the planet, will only be reached if we stop the exploration and burning of fossil fuels. The estimate is that by the end of the century the world will be 2.8°C warmer.
UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, in a speech at the COP, said that "we cannot save a burning planet with a firehose of fossil fuels" and called on countries: "I implore governments to help industry make the right choice; regulating, legislating, setting a fair price for carbon, ending fossil fuel subsidies and adopting a windfall tax on profits."
The leader of the United Nations calls not for the reduction, but for the elimination of fossil fuels, so that we can guarantee the survival of human life on Earth.
President Lula, despite his beautiful speeches, overshadows the environmental appeal and undermines the country's image by accepting the invitation to join OPEC+, a bloc of ten nations allied to the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries. The president of Petrobras stated that the company will be one of the last to stop exploring for oil. Furthermore, Brazil still wants to explore oil in the Amazon.
Meanwhile, the National Congress continues to attack the demarcation of territories and the rights of indigenous peoples. The Minister of Indigenous Peoples, S?nia Guajajara, stated that the position of the ruralist group "goes against international agreements and treaties to protect the environment and reduce the impacts of the climate emergency". The demarcation and protection of indigenous lands is one of the solutions to combat the climate crisis and remains paralyzed despite campaign promises.
"They gave us with one hand and took it away with both. It is the role of the president and his allies and the center, with whom he has an agreement, to mediate and put pressure on the maintenance of the vetoes to PL 2903 and what has proven unconstitutional, the abominable time frame", says Avelin Kambiwa.
